11.3 The long hitchhike

We woke up at 7.30am and a few minutes later the sun shined on our tent. That gave us a boost for the day.

It was easy to walk in the forest. At some point we made a break to check some accommodation in Twizel or Tekapo. But in each of the cities wasn’t a free bed available in the next days. We had lunch at the Lakefront of Lake Ohau. Then we hitchhiked to the main road. A nice hunter gave us a ride. On the main road we decided to try to go to Tekapo because the section from Twizel to Tekapo is not worth to walk it. It’s about 60km along a canal.

We stood quite a long time at the main road.

We didn’t believe our eyes but a tour bus stopped. It was an empty one. Two girls were sitting in the front and they had to drive their tour bus back to Christchurch because the tour with the clients was finished. They had a food basket with apples, oranges, nut bars and jellies. Well, it was supposed for the clients but they told us that we should feel free to grab some snacks.

We even stopped at a good place to make a photo of Mt Cook. So here it is:

It was a long hitchhike but we believe this section is not worth to hike.

When we arrived at Tekapo we went to the Holiday Park. The sun was roasting us. So we had a swim in the lake.
